RIYADH: The King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives, known as Darah, has published a new book detailing the history of the adhan, or call to prayer, along with the biographies of the muezzins who have served at the Two Holy Mosques over the centuries.
Authored by Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid, a respected member of the Council of Senior Scholars and imam and preacher at the Grand Mosque, the book carefully explores the origins, virtues, and importance of the adhan ritual in Islam.
The book is structured into three main sections: the history of the adhan, biographies of 95 muezzins from the Grand Mosque, and biographies of 147 muezzins from the Prophet’s Mosque.
It traces the lineage of those who have called Muslims to prayer from the era of Prophet Muhammad to the present day.
Utilizing credible historical sources and interviews, the author employs a scientific methodology to document the evolution of the tools used in the adhan and the special relationship between the muezzin and the mosque.
The publication also highlights the Saudi government’s ongoing support in selecting highly skilled muezzins and implementing advanced audio technology to broadcast the call to prayer both locally and globally.
This new book enriches Darah’s collection and serves as an invaluable resource for researchers and anyone interested in the rich history of the Two Holy Mosques and Islamic rituals.
